I Am She
Es mi intento de presentar la realidad, cruda, pero finalmente optimista, de cómo las mujeres han superado, dificultades biológicas y sociales, para al final encontrarse transformadas, libres, y satisfechas.
Is my attempt to present reality: raw and cruel, but optimistic too, showing how women have always overcome biological and social obstacles to ultimately find themselves: transformed, free and satisfied.
La menopausia me hizo reflexionar sobre mi persona y mi género, y me quedé impresionada por la representación social e histórica de las mujeres.
Vi como las mujeres son simultáneamente admiradas por su belleza, estigmatizadas por su biología, deseadas, amadas, insultadas, comercializadas y ridiculizadas.
Pocas veces vi a mujeres reales. Con sus problemas y dudas, con su valentía y rebeldía. Vi mucha fotografía de modelos femeninas, con sus poses sexys, sus cuerpos estilizados, vendiendo un producto o a sí mismas.
No vi lo que quería ver.
The onset of menopause made me reflect about myself and what it means to be a woman. I became fascinated by the portrayal of women in history and in current society. I saw how women were simultaneously admired for their beauty, stigmatised for their biology, desired, insulted, commoditisation and ridiculed.
Rarely did I see real women living real situations, their problems and doubts, their courage and rebellion. But I did see a lot of female models, with their sexy poses and pouting, their stylised bodies, selling products or selling themselves.
I didn’t see what I wanted to see.
